About

Born in Cosenza in 1953, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery with honors from the University and the prestigious Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari of Pisa in 1977. He specialized with honors in Respiratory Diseases and Phthisiology in 1980 and in Cardiovascular Diseases in 1983. In 1984 he was a Research Fellow at the Division of Cardiology of the University of Florida, directed by Prof. Richard C. Conti. From 1985 to 1991 he worked at the Cardiovascular Research Unit of the Hammersmith Hospital in London, directed by Professor Attilio Maseri, first as Honorary Clinical Assistant and subsequently as Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant. In 1991 he was appointed Head of the Hemodynamics Laboratory at the Institute of Cardiology of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. In 2000 he became Associate Professor of Cardiology and Head of the Intensive and Sub-Intensive Cardiology Department. Since January 2002 he has been Full Professor of Cardiology, Director of the Institute of Cardiology and Director of the School of Specialization in Cardiology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. From 1 November 2008 to 2020 he has been Director of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Sciences. Since 2020 he has been Director of the University Department of Cardiovascular and Pneumological Sciences at the Catholic University of Rome, Director of the Cardiology Unit of the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli, Director of the specialization school in cardiology and of the Doctoral School in Cellular and Molecular Research. He is Editor in Chief of the European Heart Journal (2020-) , member of the Editorial Board of Circulation , Clinical Cardiology and the Revista Española de Cardiologia and Past-Associate Editor of Heart (1999-2006). He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology , Member of the Congress Programme Committee of the European Society of Cardiology , Past President of the Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation (2003-2004), Past Chairman of the Cluster “Circulation” and member of the Science Council (2005-2006) of the European Society of Cardiology. In 1992 he received the Newburgh Prize from Professor Rita Levi Montalcini for “exceptional scientific contributions to the field of cardiovascular research”. In 2013 he received the Arrigo Recordati International Award for Scientific Research for the excellent and innovative results achieved in the study of the central role of the microcirculation in system and organ pathologies. In 2015 he was awarded the annual Krakoff International Lecture in Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University Medical School, Boston, USA. The main scientific interests are: 1) the mechanisms of ischemic cardiac pain, 2) the mechanisms of transient myocardial ischemia, 3) the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes. He is the author of over 1000 publications in journals indexed in the Index Medicus and with an H index of 73. Since 2008 Prof. Crea is Professor of Cardiology, Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, Director of the Postgraduate School in Cardiology and Coordinator of the PhD program in Cellular and Molecular Cardiology at the Catholic University in Rome. Research activity has been mainly focused on the study of the multiple mechanisms of myocardial ischemia in chronic and acute coronary syndromes. Prof. Crea has been awarded numerous research awards including the Arrigo Recordati International Prize for the “Lifetime achievement in researching the pivotal role of microcirculation in systemic and organ diseases”. He has given prestigious lectureship worldwide including the 7th annual Robert L. Krakoff International Lecture in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University Medical School. Since September 2020 he is Editor-in-Chief of the European Heart Journal.
