About
Dr. Aurelio José Figueredo is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Arizona, where he has made significant contributions to the fields of evolutionary psychology and behavioral development. He served as the Director of the Ethology and Evolutionary Psychology Laboratory within the Department of Psychology, School of Mind, Brain, and Behavior, College of Science. Dr. Figueredo's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, graduating with high honors and a minor in Biology from California State University, Los Angeles, on March 19, 1983. He then pursued his graduate studies at the University of California, Riverside, earning a Master of Arts in Psychology on March 23, 1985, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Psychology on December 12, 1987. His doctoral dissertation focused on the "statistical measurement, developmental mechanisms, and adaptive ecological functions of conditioned host selection in the parasitoid Jewel wasp." Throughout his tenure at the University of Arizona, Dr. Figueredo held various academic positions, starting as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in 1987, advancing to Associate Professor in 1993, and achieving full Professorship in 2002. In February 2007, he was also appointed as a Professor of Family Studies and Human Development at the Norton School of Family and Consumer Science. His research interests are diverse, encompassing evolutionary psychology, behavioral genetics, and the development of intelligence, life history strategy, sex, and violence in both human and nonhuman animals. Additionally, he has delved into the quantitative ethology and social development of insects, birds, and primates. One of his notable contributions is the development of the Arizona Life History Battery (ALHB), a comprehensive set of cognitive and behavioral indicators designed to assess life history strategy. This battery has been instrumental in advancing research in evolutionary psychology and behavioral ecology. Dr. Figueredo's scholarly work includes numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, with topics ranging from host-cue information processing in Jewel wasps to the evolutionary psychology of domestic violence. His dedication to research excellence has been recognized through various honors and awards. In May 2017, he was named a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He has also held several editorial positions, including Book Review Editor for "Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences" in June 2017 and Associate Editor roles for both "Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences" and the "Journal of Social, Evolutionary, and Cultural Psychology." Beyond his research and editorial contributions, Dr. Figueredo has been actively involved in various professional organizations. In August 2010, he was appointed Vice President for Information for the International Society for the Study of Human Ethology. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the "Human Ethology Bulletin" in January 2010. His commitment to the academic community is further evidenced by his role as Coordinator for Program Evaluation and Research Methodology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Arizona in October 2010. Dr. Figueredo's extensive career reflects a profound dedication to understanding the complexities of behavior from an evolutionary perspective, significantly enriching the field of psychology.
