    5 Feet UX: A Paradigm Shift Beyond Mobile-First Design

    Description / Abstract

    This article introduces and examines the emerging domain of "5 Feet User Experience" (5ft UX), which encompasses interfaces designed for interaction from a distance, such as smart TVs, conference room systems, and immersive environments. While the mobile-first paradigm has dominated digital design for over a decade, it proves inadequate when applied to 5ft UX contexts where users interact with displays from several feet away. The article defines the unique characteristics of 5ft UX, including altered neural processing at distance, multi-user collaboration requirements, and distinct input mechanism needs. It establishes that simply scaling up mobile interfaces creates significant usability challenges related to proportion, input methods, and information architecture. The article proposes a dedicated design framework for 5ft UX based on four key principles: ubiquitous understanding, multi-user considerations, appropriate visual hierarchy, and ecosystem integration. By recognizing 5ft UX as a distinct design domain with its requirements and opportunities, this article advocates for specialized approaches that acknowledge the fundamental differences between intimate, personal device interaction and shared, distance-based experiences.
