Sustainable Waste Management and Circular Economy Practices among Tourism Accommodations: Towards a Greener Hospitality Sector

    Description / Abstract

This study, entitled “Sustainable Waste Management and Circular Economy Practices among Tourism Accommodations: Towards a Greener Hospitality Sector,” examined the implementation of sustainable waste management and circular economy initiatives among selected tourism accommodations. Using a descriptive quantitative design, data were collected from 46 employees of four major resorts in Boac. The results revealed that waste disposal and segregation practices were generally well implemented, while recycling and circular economy initiatives remained limited. Key challenges identified included inadequate infrastructure, weak enforcement of the 3R principles, and limited government support. Guided by the Circular Economy Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Sustainable Development Theory, the study underscored the need for stronger policies and behavioral transformation toward sustainability. The findings supported Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11, 12, and 13, which promote environmental protection, responsible consumption, and climate action in Boac’s tourism sector.

    Relevance and Originality

The paper addresses an important and timely issue in sustainable tourism, particularly focusing on waste management and circular economy practices in accommodation establishments. The topic is highly relevant to current environmental priorities and aligns well with global sustainability goals. The study offers a useful contribution by situating the analysis within a local tourism context in Boac, Marinduque, which adds contextual value to existing literature. However, the originality could be further strengthened by more explicitly distinguishing the work from prior studies in similar island tourism settings. The conceptual integration is appropriate, though somewhat descriptive in its current form.

    Methodology

The descriptive quantitative approach is suitable for the stated objectives. The use of survey data from employees across multiple resorts provides a reasonable basis for analysis. The questionnaire development process is clearly described and supported by prior studies, which enhances credibility. However, the methodology would benefit from clearer justification of sampling strategy and a more detailed explanation of instrument validation procedures. The reliance on descriptive statistics is appropriate, but additional analytical depth could improve interpretive strength.

    Validity and Reliability

The study demonstrates moderate attention to validity through reference to established instruments and prior research sources. However, limited information is provided regarding reliability testing of the survey tool, which raises questions about measurement consistency. The findings are generally plausible and aligned with cited literature, though generalizability is restricted due to the small and localized sample size. Potential response bias from self reported data should also be acknowledged more explicitly.

    Clarity and Structure

The manuscript is generally well organized and follows a logical progression from introduction to conclusions. The language is mostly clear and accessible, although some sections are overly descriptive and could be more concise. Tables are useful in presenting results, but interpretation occasionally repeats information already evident in the data presentation. A more streamlined narrative would improve readability and academic impact.

    Results and Analysis

The results are presented in a structured manner and provide useful insights into waste management practices in the selected resorts. The discussion connects findings with relevant literature effectively. However, the analytical depth is limited, particularly in explaining underlying causes of observed patterns. The interpretation of statistical differences is appropriate, but further discussion on practical implications for policy and management would strengthen the contribution.

    IJ Publication Publisher

The manuscript presents a relevant study on sustainable waste management in tourism accommodations, however it requires improvement in methodological clarity and stronger justification of statistical analysis before consideration for publication.
