Abstract

Young people ought to be at the centre of discussions about pornography and its meanings and place in teenagers’ lives but how they are placed in these must be properly considered. In this presentation I will consider how young people’s engagements with pornography have been researched, and the key problems with much of this research. I will talk in detail about research carried out by Clarissa Smith, Martin Barker and myself with pornography audiences and what this suggests about why and how pornography might be significant in young people’s lives. I will examine how and why this is important for developing our understanding of the relationships between pornography and sexual health.
