Environmental Impact of Bauxite Mining: A Review

Abstract

Since prehistoric times bauxite have been extracted from the earth which has been linked with the social, economical and industrial development. The various mining processes create negative impacts on environment both during the mining operations and for years after mine is closed. To quantify the impact of the mining on environment, it is necessary at first to evaluate the existing environmental quality of the area. As, all the environmental dimensions may not be significantly affected by a particular mining activity; it is necessary to identify the pertinent dimensions for studying in detail, in order to analyze the impact of the mining activity on them.
