About

In addition to the core symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, some people with ADHD also show symptoms of emotional dysregulation. Problems in emotion regulation in people with ADHD are closely linked to maladaptive behavior, e.g. with increased aggressive behavior or (violent) crimes. Despite the significant importance of emotion regulation with regard to the general level of functioning of people with ADHD, the psychological, behavioral and neurobiological correlates of emotion regulation have so far only been inadequately investigated in people with ADHD. Therefore, the current project plans to close this gap. For this purpose, 40 adults with ADHD will be examined with 40 non-affected adults from the general population with regard to their emotion regulation skills and the activation patterns in the brain during active emotion regulation will be compared between the two groups. In addition, the connection between deficits in emotion regulation and impulsive-aggressive behavior will be investigated. Dr. rer. biol. hum., Dr. med. Daniel Turner (Dipl.-Psych., assistant doctor) studied psychology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 2003 to 2009 and then medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf from 2008 to 2016. Since August 2016, he has been an assistant doctor and research associate at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Mainz. His scientific focus is on risk factors in sex offenders, the drug treatment of paraphilic and hypersexual disorders, neuropsychological deficits in people with mental illnesses and criminals with a focus on emotion regulation and inhibition, and comorbid sexual disorders in psychiatric illnesses.
