Dr. Joel Stein is a distinguished expert in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, currently serving as the Simon Baruch Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. With an academic and professional career spanning decades, Dr. Stein obtained his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1982, followed by his MD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1986. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, later specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Montefiore Hospital. His expertise lies in stroke rehabilitation, with a significant focus on innovative approaches such as exercise therapy, robotic-assisted rehabilitation, and emerging technologies to facilitate motor recovery after stroke. Prior to his current role, Dr. Stein served as the Chief Medical Officer at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston for 16 years, where he also held the position of medical director of the stroke rehabilitation program and was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. In 2008, he was appointed as Physiatrist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and took on leadership roles at both Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Cornell Medical College. His research contributions and clinical innovations have led to the publication of multiple books on stroke recovery and rehabilitation, including the comprehensive medical textbook *Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation*. Dr. Stein is board-certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Internal Medicine, reinforcing his expertise in treating conditions such as multiple sclerosis, neurological rehabilitation, spasticity management, and stroke rehabilitation. His hospital affiliations include NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester. Over the years, Dr. Stein has been recognized for his excellence in rehabilitation medicine through prestigious honors, including multiple Partners in Excellence Awards from Partners Healthcare for contributions to programmatic excellence, quality treatment, and service improvements. His leadership in the field continues to shape advancements in rehabilitation science, promoting the integration of innovative technologies and evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes.
