Department of Sociology, Saurashtra University Rajkot

The Post graduate Department of Sociology was established in 1977; it has a team of 4 highly qualified permanent faculties and invites guest faculties for the advance teaching-learning programme. The department offers fulltime M.A. course 4 semesters department offers fulltime M.A. course 4 semesters with an intake capacity of 60, M. Phil. and Ph.D. program based on UGC regulation 2016. course in the Department. 85 students are awarded Ph.D. degree and presently 10 scholars are in various stages of completion of their doctoral research. Social Sciences and Humanities student are admitted in the course. Innovative classroom methodology like ICT based & Classless (field based) teaching methodology is adopted. Teaching is also supplemented with seminars, workshops projects and annual lecture series. Department library has more than 700 books and 10 Journals. Department work with varies NGO and other institute. The thrust areas of research include coastal zone communities, environmental studies, caste and community studies, gender studies and developmental studies Department faculties have completed and ongoing 15 research projects published 10 students’ research projects, 42 books and more than 170 articles. Every year department conducts national and state level seminars, workshops and conference. The University has important seats of learning spreading knowledge in the respective fields i.e. Nehru Chair, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Chair, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chair, Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chair, Gulabdas Broker Chair, etc. The University runs a centre of learning and research in the name of Shri Zaverchand Meghani i.e. Meghani Lok Sahitya Kendra. The University in collaboration with Commissionerate of Industries, Government of Gujarat, and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has started National Facility for Drugs Discovery (NFDD) in the year 2009. The NFDD is a state of art centre of research and innovation. Later in the year 2014, the NFDD was transformed into Centre of Excellence (COE).
