The CEng title is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment, as set out in the professional standard UK-SPEC. Individuals generally develop these through education and working experience. A Bachelors degree, with Honours, in engineering or technology, accredited for CEng, plus an appropriate and accredited Masters degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD), or appropriate further learning to Masters level An accredited integrated MEng degree. These are detailed in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech) Standard. The award and retention of these titles ensures that employers, government and wider society – both in the UK and overseas – can have confidence in the knowledge, experience and commitment of engineers and technicians on the register.
