This Institute was established in 1961 as one of the RECs for imparting technical education in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In the year 1983-84 the Under Graduate programmes in Electronics Engineering was introduced and in the year 1
onics Engineering was introduced and in the year 1988-89 the UG programmes in Computer Engineering and Production Engineering was started. In the year 1995-96, UG programme in Chemical Engineering was introduced. In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, the Central Government on the advice of the University Grants Commission, has declared the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVREC), Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat with status of “Deemed University” with effect from 4th December 2002. The Institute has been granted the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ w.e.f. Aug. 15, 2007. At present, the Institute is offering Six UG Programmes, Nineteen PG Programmes and Three M.Sc. Five Years Integrated Programme including doctoral programme in all above branches.
Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, perceives to be a globally accepted centre of excellence in technical education catalyzing absorption, innovation, diffusion and transfer of high technologies resulting in enhanced quality for all the stakeholders.
The mission of the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat is to be a leading technical Institute not only at national level but also at International level for imparting training to manpower as per the needs of technology. It is also envisaged to provide the necessary infrastructure to take up research work and to provide the mechanism to interact with industries effectively.
The National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College), Surat was established in June 1961 under the joint aegis of the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. The Institute name begins from the name of India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, popularly known as the Iron man of India, Honorable Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Following the recommendation of the R. A. Marshelkar Committee, all Regional Engineering Colleges were transformed into the National Institutes of Technology in 2002. Later, the Institute was granted the Deemed University status by the UGC/AICTE and renamed as the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT). In the 2007, the parliament passed the ‘NIT act’. The act granted the ‘Institute of National Importance’ status to the SVNIT. The greatly concerning objective was to maximize the performance of the NIT. That helped the academic trajectory of the SVNIT tend considerably towards the contemporary global standard with inclusivity and diversity.
As a matter of academic reforms, the Institute has adopted new revised curricula for the undergraduate programmes to achieve agreements with global requirements. Significantly, the new curricula offer greater flexibility to augment their learning via the introduction of several sets of electives under different specialized domains. The Institute has begun B. Tech. (Honours) as well as B. Tech. (Minor) degree programmes to give greater flexibility and multidisciplinary approach amongst UG students. It’s National Institutional Ranking framework (NIRF), the Government of India rank among all the technical Institutes is also progressive i.e. 61, 58 and 54 in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. The journey of our Institute is progressing consecutively towards better ranking.
Currently, the Institute offers six (6) under graduate degree (UG) programs, three (3) integrated programs (five-year MSc) and nineteen (19) Master of Technology programmes. The Institute has inducted two (2) new M Tech programmes (Instrumentation and Control, Construction Technology and Management) as well. Some new promising M Tech programmes with greater expectations are under considerations. Besides the above academic programmes, PhD programs are being run under the Academic Departments of the Institute. Currently, the Institute admits the PhD students under eight distinct categories to diversify imparting higher education to the society in the broader framework as well as bring diversity in the SVNIT. The selection process of the B Tech students and MSc students is done via the performance in the main examination of the JEE. M Tech admissions to the Institute in a specialization are made by considering a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score in a well-defined paper in combination with a qualifying degree in the given set of degrees. PhD admissions are made via a rigorous selection procedure, including the percentage requirement, GATE score requirements as well as written and interview tests. Currently, the Institute admits the PhD students under the nine distinct categories, known as PhD categories. The newly added PhD category is FIS category (Full-time International Research Scholar) for the ICCR Scholars. For the greater details, the Academic Brochures can be consulted.
