Abstract

Until 2020, there was no representative sex survey for Germany with published data. The GeSiD study "Health and Sexuality in Germany" is the first nationwide, representative sex survey. The aim of this short article is to provide an introduction to the study and its various areas of investigation. The initial situation is described and an insight into the methodological approach is given. Selected results of the study are presented and possible new questions for follow-up studies are suggested. For the GeSiD study, a total of 4,955 people (2,336 men, 2,619 women) aged 18-75 were surveyed between 2018 and 2019. The computer-assisted face-to-face interviews had an extensive self-administered section and asked about a wide range of sexual behavior and sexual health topics. Data on sexual identity, relationships, sexual behavior and sexual health were collected. These show, among other things, that only a minority of respondents have ever spoken to a doctor about HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The study shows the continued clear need for education, information and training in the field of sexual health.
