Abstract

Social psychology is partly about the power of situations; but to us, social psychology is also very much about people. We believe students sign up for the course because they want to learn about people, and we think social psychologists actually have plenty to tell them. Hence our book's title: Social Psychology and Human Nature. This text will tell your students about situations, but it will also tell them about the people in those situations. We see people as highly complex social and cultural beings. With this book we hope to "put the person back in the situation" with an integrative introduction to the field that shows how social psychology can offer a remarkably new and coherent vision of human nature and social behavior. We want our book to be more than an encyclopedic list of findings--we want it to leave people with a coherent, integrative understanding of the human being. We discuss classic and current research to present an integrative approach that emphasizes how culture and nature interact and mutually shape human behavior. We also promote critical thinking and scientific curiosity, going beyond current texts to show students how inner processes (including cognition, emotion, and the self) serve interpersonal functions (social interactions, social life, and culture). We hope that your students will be engaged by the clear writing style, emphasis on applications, and vibrant visual presentation of our text. What is social psychology? Our integrated approach in Social Psychology and Human Nature shows students the big picture. Social psychology is an intellectually rich field, and it has much to teach students about their own lives (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
