FROM NO CONTROL TO FULL CONTROL: THE JOURNEY OF VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT
Abstract
Background: Voluntary movement is a hallmark of human motor function, representing the integration of cortical control, neuromuscular coordination, and sensory feedback. Following central nervous system (CNS) injury—particularly stroke—this ability is disrupted, leading to impaired coordination, abnormal muscle synergies, and functional limitations. Recovery of voluntary control is a progressive process that transitions from absence of movement to synergy-dominated patterns and ultimately to selective, coordinated motor performance. This article explores the neurophysiological basis, components, assessment, and clinical implications of voluntary control, with emphasis on the Brunnstrom approach. Understanding this continuum enables clinicians to design targeted, stage-specific rehabilitation strategies to optimize recovery and functional independence.
