Abstract
Bride Price is a marriage payment from the groom side to the bride side. It has its own historical existence. It has its own theoretical frame work in reasons and hypotheses of its occurrence. So, the main purpose of this study was to explore the prevalence of bride price in Borena Woreda. In addition to this, the study will suggest the possible reasons and hypotheses for the prevalence of this marriage payment culture in the study area. Sequential exploratory research design and mixed research methodology were employed. Multistage and purposive sampling techniques were used to select participants. 138 respondents, 24 interviewees and 10 groups of FGD (Focus Group Discussion) participants were selected. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered thorough questionnaire, interview, FGD, observation and document analysis. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical techniques and thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the culture of bride price is prevalent fully. The cultural practice seems to occurred for creating and strengthening social relations and for females’ economic value, and the people practice this culture for cultural fulfilment and for covering the wedding expenses in the female side. The study showed us the unique and interesting ceremonial procedures of bride price. These findings call for further study to investigate more.
