Exploding the Self-Esteem Myth

Abstract

People inherently understand the significance of self-esteem to their psychological well-being, and it is no surprise that most of us strive to nurture and bolster it whenever possible. What stands out, however, is how the emphasis on self-esteem has evolved into a shared societal priority, particularly in America. Here, a positive self-image is regarded as a fundamental psychological foundation from which numerous beneficial outcomes emerge. Consequently, the belief that low self-esteem is the root cause of both individual and societal challenges has driven a far-reaching social agenda for decades. This has given rise to numerous initiatives and campaigns aimed at elevating people's sense of self-worth.
