EXERGAMING: THE FUTURE OF EXERCISE AND REHABILITATION
Abstract
Background: Exergaming combines physical exercise with interactive digital gaming using motion sensing technologies and virtual environments. It provides an engaging and motivating approach to exercise and has potential benefits in improving balance, strength, coordination, and adherence to rehabilitation programs. Its application is increasingly explored across different age groups, particularly in rehabilitation settings. Need of Research: Despite growing interest in exergaming, evidence regarding its effectiveness, feasibility, and routine clinical use remains limited and inconsistent. Understanding awareness, perceived effectiveness, and barriers is essential to support its integration into standard rehabilitation practice and to guide the development of structured clinical protocols. Methodology: A descriptive observational survey was conducted among physiotherapy students and clinicians using a structured online questionnaire. The survey assessed awareness of exergaming, perceived effectiveness, commonly used tools, and barriers to its implementation in clinical practice. Result: Most participants were aware of exergaming, with around 70% recognizing it as a therapeutic modality. A majority believed that exergaming is effective in rehabilitation. However, barriers to its clinical implementation were identified, including high equipment cost, lack of therapist training, and limited resources in clinical settings. Discussion: Participants demonstrated positive perception and good awareness of exergaming. Most respondents had a correct conceptual understanding of exergaming as active, movement-based video exercise that promotes physical participation rather than sedentary screen use. Exergaming can serve as an effective adjunct to conventional physiotherapy by improving motivation, enjoyment, balance, coordination, and overall fitness. However, high equipment cost and limited therapist training remain significant barriers to widespread clinical implementation. Conclusion: Exergaming is a motivating and effective adjunct to conventional physiotherapy with good awareness and acceptance among physiotherapy students and clinicians. Addressing barriers such as high equipment cost and the need for structured therapist training is essential for its successful and sustainable integration into routine rehabilitation practice.
