Abstract
Solid-state fermentation has gained importance recently due to several advantages over submerged fermentations. Bioreactor design aspects, which are important criteria, however, have not been given enough attention by researchers of solid-state fermentations and the present state of knowledge does not indicate an ideal type of bioreactor for solid state fermentations. This paper reviews different types of bioreactor which have been described and used for various purposes, incorporating several modification for improved operation and performance.
