A Review of Chronobiology-Based Drug Delivery Systems
Abstract
The field of chronopharmacology explores the impact of biological rhythms on drug efficacy and safety, leading to the emergence of chronobiology-based drug delivery systems. These systems optimize therapeutic outcomes by aligning drug release with the body’s natural biological cycles, enhancing efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. This review provides an overview of chronopharmacology principles, existing drug delivery technologies, and advancements in chronotherapeutics. Various delivery approaches, including pulsatile, programmable, and stimuli-responsive systems, are discussed in the context of conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, asthma, and cancer. Challenges and prospects in developing chronobiology-driven drug formulations are also explored, highlighting their potential in personalized medicine.
