A comparative study to assess the psychosocial problems between elderly people

Abstract

Aging is an inevitable process that presents unique challenges across physical, mental, and financial domains. This comparative study evaluates the psychosocial problems experienced by 60 elderly individuals in Guntur district, split evenly between those residing in old age homes and those living with families. Using a descriptive-comparative research design and a structured questionnaire, the study found a significant difference in psychosocial challenges based on living environments. Specifically, elders in old age homes reported higher mean levels of psychosocial problems (95.42%) compared to those living with family (87.02%), often due to increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation. The research highlights the need for updated nursing curricula and tailored interventions to support the mental health and social well-being of the aging population.
