Mirror of the Times: Literature as the Reflection of Society
Literature has persistently functioned as a crucial socio-historical document through which social realities are not merely reflected but critically examined, contested, and reconfigured. This research paper investigates literature as an enduring archive of class critique, class struggle, and racial discrimination and injustice, emphasizing its role in revealing the material and ideological structures that govern human societies. Drawing upon Marxist literary criticism, critical race theory, postcolonial studies, and sociological approaches to literature, the study contends that literary texts operate as dynamic ideological sites wherein relations of power between social classes and racial groups are articulated and challenged.
Through a sustained critical engagement with both canonical and marginalized texts across diverse historical and cultural contexts, the paper demonstrates how literature documents lived experiences of economic exploitation, racial oppression, and systemic inequality. Simultaneously, it highlights literature’s capacity to function as a mode of resistance by imagining alternative social possibilities. By integrating close textual analysis with theoretical inquiry, the study positions literature as both a reflective mirror of social injustice and an active instrument for ideological critique and emancipatory thought.
Keywords: Class struggle, class critique, racial discrimination, literature and society, Marxism, critical race theory.
