GITANJALI ACROSS WORLDS How Translation Became Transcreation
In 1912, Rabindranath Tagore sailed from Calcutta to London carrying a slender notebook of poems he had translated from his own Bengali collection, Gitanjali. The voyage, both physical and metaphysical, marks one of the most consequential crossings in modern literary history. Between the Bay of Bengal and the English Channel, the poet remade himself—turning the intimate songs of his mother tongue into English prose poems that would soon enchant the West and earn him the Nobel Prize in 1913. That transformation is the central current of this study: the passage of Gitanjali across worlds, where translation becomes transcreation. Tagore’s act of self-translation defies the neat binaries of original and copy, source and target. In Translation Studies, Susan Bassnett observes that translation “is not a secondary act but a creative process in its own right” (43). Tagore anticipates this insight by half a century. His Gitanjali does not merely transfer meaning from Bengali to English; it reimagines meaning in another idiom. The English version omits, condenses, and rephrases, yet acquires its own aesthetic integrity. As Sujit Mukherjee notes, translation in Indian practice often “seeks discovery rather than equivalence” (13). Tagore’s work enacts precisely that discovery: the realization that translation can be an inward pilgrimage, not a technical exercise.
