    CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN SOLAR ENERGY ENGINEERING: IMPLEMENTING LEAN PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO OPTIMIZE RESOURCE UTILIZATION AND DELIVERY

    Abstract

    The field of solar energy engineering is rapidly evolving, driven by the urgent need for sustainable solutions in the face of climate change and increasing energy demands. This research paper investigates the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in solar energy engineering, focusing on how lean project management methodologies can be effectively implemented to optimize resource utilization and enhance project delivery. The paper begins by identifying key challenges in the solar energy sector, including high upfront costs, regulatory hurdles, and the complexity of project execution. The methodology employed in this study includes a combination of qualitative interviews with industry professionals and quantitative analysis of project performance metrics across several solar energy projects in India. A total of six diverse projects, ranging from residential installations to large-scale solar farms, were analyzed to assess the impact of lean practices. Findings reveal that projects utilizing lean methodologies experienced an average of 30% reduction in project lead times and a 20% decrease in overall project costs. Specific lean tools such as Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), and 5S were instrumental in identifying inefficiencies and streamlining processes.
