Smart Parking System with research on Thread Communication Protocol

    Abstract

Nowadays, enhancements in technology and areas in the automobile community has resulted in almost every individual making use of an automobile entity, due to this there has been significant increase in industrial and personal advancements but this has also resulted in increase in traffic, congestion, pollution and many more areas of concern. Smart parking systems (SPS) has been a topic of discussion for several years. Blockchain, IoT and network solutions have been proposed in order to ease the use of parking systems and tackle inconveniences caused due to lack of parking spaces. A major route of research in this domain is the use of IoT devices and wireless communication protocols to back it up. Many devices such as sensors, actuators, RFID’s, Zigbee communication protocol, NB-IoT communication protocol, Edge computing and much more have contributed to significant positive changes in the parking sector. In this paper, we intend on implementing a new communication protocol which eases the use of connectivity between IoT devices in an environment known as Thread Mesh protocol which was introduced in 2015 by Thread inc. Even though there has been extensive research done on IoT based SPS’s, security seems to be a major concern in majority of IoT devices and protocols, Thread communication protocol aims at reducing the risk of security attacks in a smart parking-system due to its in-built cryptography, commissioning, adaptation to PAN (Personal Area Network) and many more features that we intend on discussing and implementing in this paper. Keywords – Smart Parking Systems, Thread Protocol, Cryptography, PAN, Internet of Things

    Relevance and Originality

The research addresses a pressing issue in urban environments: the challenges of traffic congestion and inadequate parking. By focusing on Smart Parking Systems (SPS) and integrating emerging technologies such as IoT and blockchain, the paper is highly relevant. The proposal to implement the Thread Mesh protocol introduces a novel perspective; however, a detailed comparison with existing protocols could enhance the originality of the work.

    Methodology

The intention to implement the Thread Mesh protocol is clear, but the methodology lacks detailed specifics. Providing information on the experimental setup, types of IoT devices utilized, and the data collection methods would strengthen the methodological framework. Additionally, detailing how the protocol will be evaluated in terms of performance and security would enhance clarity.

    Validity & Reliability

While the focus on security features of the Thread protocol is commendable, the paper should include information on how the effectiveness of these features will be validated. Discussing the metrics for assessing security risks, data integrity, and overall system performance would help establish the validity and reliability of the proposed solution. Addressing potential limitations in the research would also add credibility.

    Clarity and Structure

The writing communicates the main ideas effectively but could benefit from improved organization. Clearly defined sections—such as introduction, methodology, results, and discussion—would enhance the overall readability. Summarizing key points at the end of each section would facilitate better understanding and highlight the significance of the findings.

    Result Analysis

While the research suggests that the Thread protocol could enhance security in smart parking systems, specific quantitative results or comparisons with other solutions are lacking. Including performance metrics, such as improvements in security and efficiency, would enrich the result analysis. Furthermore, discussing the broader implications for urban planning and the future of smart city initiatives would add depth to the research's impact.
