Survey on Design of CIC Decimator and Interpolator in Wireless Receivers

Abstract

The advancement in Wireless communications has always led to the need of multi rate signal processing. Multi-rate signal processing plays a pivotal role in the field of wireless communication due to many reasons like its ability to improve its efficiency, flexibility, and performance in various aspects of signal handling. The computational complexity can be minimized; signal quality can be enhanced and easy adaptability to varied communication scenarios is possible by usage of different sampling rates. So should be the design of wireless receivers to adapt to different sampling rates where it is observed that Cascaded Integrator-Comb (CIC) filters play a pivotal role. CIC filters have multiplier-less architecture and are considered more efficient in decimation and interpolation which make them perfect for high-speed digital communications. This review not only highlights the relevance, design enhancements, and application of CIC filters in meeting the growing demands of next-generation wireless technologies but also focuses on the estimation of other hardware resource parameters to evaluate their performance.

Relevance and Originality

The Research Article highlights the significance of multi-rate signal processing in wireless communication, showing how it enhances efficiency, adaptability, and performance. By focusing on Cascaded Integrator-Comb (CIC) filters, the work underlines their unique advantage of multiplier-less architecture, making them particularly suitable for high-speed communication systems. The originality lies in positioning CIC filters as central to meeting the demands of emerging wireless technologies while considering hardware resource implications.

Methodology

The article explains CIC filter design and their use for decimation and interpolation in a clear manner, connecting them to multi-rate processing challenges. The methodology provides a conceptual framework but could be strengthened with more detail on experimental setups, simulation environments, and comparative evaluations with other filter types. A structured approach to hardware parameter estimation would improve methodological transparency and depth.

Validity & Reliability

The claims regarding efficiency and adaptability of CIC filters are well aligned with their established role in wireless systems, making the conclusions plausible. However, the lack of specific validation data or benchmarking limits the strength of reliability. Presenting quantitative comparisons with other architectures under different communication conditions would enhance robustness and confirm generalizability.

Clarity and Structure

The Research Article is logically presented, beginning with the motivation for multi-rate processing and progressing to the advantages of CIC filters. The arguments are easy to follow, with a coherent flow that aids readability. Still, inclusion of diagrams or tabulated results would better illustrate technical points, and minimizing repetition would ensure sharper clarity.

Result Analysis

The analysis emphasizes CIC filters as efficient and adaptable, highlighting their ability to reduce complexity and support flexible communication designs. Yet, the absence of concrete experimental outcomes or detailed numerical comparisons reduces the depth of interpretation and limits the strength of the conclusions.
