Examining The Study Habit of Single Parent Children and Their Academic Performance

Abstract

Background: Single-parent households are increasingly common, and their impact on children's development has been a subject of extensive research. While single parents often face unique challenges, including financial strain and increased household responsibilities, their children's academic outcomes are not universally negative. This study aims to investigate the relationship between study habits and academic performance in children from single-parent families. Method: A sample of 150 students from single-parent households studying in class X was recruited from various schools in Garo Hills region. Data were drawn by using scale on study habit and academic report card were used to generate data for the study. To accomplish this, the researchers employed survey method as a research design Results: No significant differences were found in overall study habits between children from single-parent and two-parent households. However, some specific study habits, such as time management and organizational skills, showed a trend towards being slightly lower in the single-parent group. No significant differences were found in overall academic performance between the two groups. Relationship between Study Habits and Academic Performance: Strong positive correlations were found between study habits and academic performance in both groups, indicating that effective study habits are crucial for academic success regardless of family structure.

Relevance and Originality

The study explores the impact of study habits on academic performance in children from single-parent households, addressing a relevant social issue. While similar research exists, the study contributes by focusing on a specific region, Garo Hills, adding cultural and demographic insights. The findings reinforce the importance of study habits, highlighting an essential factor in academic success. However, a deeper exploration of socioeconomic variables could enhance originality.

Methodology

The research employs a survey method with a sample of 150 Class X students, which is a reasonable size for statistical analysis. The use of standardized study habit scales and academic records ensures data credibility. However, additional qualitative methods, such as interviews or observations, could provide richer insights. The selection process for participants could be detailed further to enhance transparency.

Validity & Reliability

The findings, particularly the correlation between study habits and academic performance, are well-supported by the data. The absence of significant differences between single-parent and two-parent households strengthens the argument that family structure alone does not determine academic outcomes. However, greater emphasis on potential confounding variables, such as parental involvement or financial stability, could improve the study’s robustness.

Clarity and Structure

The article is well-organized, presenting a logical progression from background to findings. The language is clear, making the research accessible. However, some sections, particularly methodology and discussion, could be more detailed to enhance comprehension. A clearer explanation of trends in time management and organization would also strengthen the flow of ideas.

Result Analysis

The study effectively interprets the data, demonstrating that study habits are critical to academic success, irrespective of family structure. The analysis is objective, though further discussion on why certain study habits differ slightly in single-parent households would add depth. A comparative approach, incorporating additional variables, could provide a more comprehensive understanding.
