Journal Descriptions
Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft (ZAW) is one of the oldest and most prestigious international journals dedicated to Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) scholarship. Founded in 1881 by Bernhard Stade, the journal has been central to the development of modern critical and historical study of the Hebrew Scriptures. ZAW publishes peer-reviewed scholarly articles focusing on textual criticism, philology (Hebrew, Aramaic, and related Semitic languages), literary analysis, historical context of the ancient Near East, and theological interpretation of Old Testament texts. It also includes research on archaeological findings, epigraphy, and comparative studies between biblical and ancient Near Eastern cultures. The journal is widely respected for its rigorous academic standards and its role in shaping historical-critical methods in biblical studies. It attracts contributions from leading scholars worldwide and publishes articles in German and English. Over time, ZAW has become a key reference journal for scholars working in theology, religious studies, and ancient history.
