Umweltwissenschaften und Schadstoff-Forschung (UWSF) was a leading peer reviewed German scientific journal dedicated to environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and pollution research. Established in 1989 by Professor Otto Hutzinger, the journal became one of the first interdisciplinary environmental science journals in the German-speaking scientific community. It provided a platform for researchers, environmental scientists, toxicologists, chemists, ecologists, and policymakers to exchange scientific knowledge on environmental contaminants and their impacts on ecosystems and human health. The journal focused on the behavior, fate, effects, and assessment of chemical substances in environmental compartments such as water, soil, air, biota, and food systems. It also covered analytical methods, environmental legislation, environmental management, sustainability, and technological developments related to pollution control. UWSF emphasized interdisciplinary approaches by integrating chemistry, ecology, toxicology, environmental technology, and regulatory science. Articles were published primarily in German with English abstracts, helping disseminate environmental research across Europe. Due to its growing international orientation, the journal was transformed in 2011 into Environmental Sciences Europe, an open access journal with a broader international readership and scope.
