Umma Journal of Contemporary Literature and Creative Arts is a Senate-approved biannual publication jointly operated by the departments of Literature and Creative Arts in the College of Humanities of the University of Dar es Salaam. The journal aims to stimulate and encourage debate on key themes in African literature and the creative arts. In 1966, two years after the Department of Literature was established in 1964 as part of the University of East Africa, a journal/magazine, Darlite, was born primarily as a students ' literary magazine. In 1970, it became Umma: A Literary Magazine from the University of Dar es Salaam before morphing into Umma: A Magazine for Original Writing (both under ISSN 0856-0854).
