Tumultes (Tumultes)
Journal Descriptions
The biannual journal Tumultes was founded in 1992 by a group of academics at Université Paris 7 who wanted to create a space for reflecting on contemporary political issues that would also act as a crucible for collective intelligence.Founded in 1992, on the initiative of the Centre de Sociologie des Pratiques et des Représentations Politiques at the Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7, Tumultes is now in its 35th issue. It is published twice a year, with the exception of double issues, when the theme addressed cannot, given its richness, be exhausted in a single issue. The editorial line has changed little since its creation. The choice is that of themed issues, which are each time as many collective books that arouse interest several years after their publication. The aim is always to discuss major political issues (fundamentalism, the fall of communism, war, national sentiment, colonization, biopolitics, citizenship, domination and resistance...), crossing approaches and disciplines, and expanding to an international and even global perspective. Tumultes makes a major effort to translate important foreign-language authors from various continents and bring them to the attention of the French-speaking public. This confrontation allows us to see how issues and theories circulate, diverge, and sometimes converge, within the same continent or from one continent to another (e.g.: Le paria). From the perspective of the Tumultes editorial board, literary works (see issue no. 19, "Poetry as a political gesture"), as well as works of visual art and even music, both inform and are informed by political analysis. On many occasions, Tumultes has also endeavored to take a fresh look or perspective at certain schools of thought (the Frankfurt School, Postmodernism) or authors (Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Günther Anders, Frantz Fanon, and soon Edward Said). While the audience for Tumultes is primarily an academic one, it is not limited to that.
