The Annual of Rabbinic Judaism (ARJ)
Journal Descriptions
The Annual of Rabbinic Judaism is a specialized peer reviewed academic yearbook devoted exclusively to the study of Rabbinic Judaism across historical periods. Launched in 1998, it was one of the first scholarly publications designed to treat Rabbinic Judaism as a unified and continuous religious tradition rather than dividing it strictly into ancient, medieval, and modern categories. The journal publishes research articles, methodological essays, scholarly debates, notes, and extensive book reviews. Its scope includes topics such as rabbinic law (Halakhah), theology, philosophy, textual studies of the Mishnah and Talmud, and the historical development of Jewish religious thought. A key aim of the publication is to highlight the intellectual continuity and coherence of Rabbinic Judaism while encouraging interdisciplinary approaches that integrate history, philology, and religious studies. The journal played an important role in advancing academic discourse in Jewish studies by providing a dedicated platform for comprehensive and critical scholarship. Although short-lived, it laid the foundation for its successor, Review of Rabbinic Judaism, which continues to develop the field further.
