Journal Descriptions

Studies in the Fantastic is a scholarly journal devoted to the critical study of fantastic literature and media. Established in 2008, it publishes refereed essays informed by literary criticism and theory, exploring both the texts themselves and their broader social functions. While grounded in literary studies, the journal embraces interdisciplinary approaches, welcoming contributions on genres and media often underrepresented in humanistic scholarship. Its scope includes weird fiction, science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, video games, architecture, science writing, futurism, and technocracy. By engaging with these diverse forms, Studies in the Fantastic highlights the cultural significance of the fantastic and its role in shaping imagination, identity, and social discourse. The journal is published twice yearly by the University of Tampa Press and is available in both print and digital formats, with issues archived on Project MUSE. Through rigorous peer review and editorial oversight, it maintains high academic standards while fostering innovative scholarship. Serving as a platform for established and emerging voices, Studies in the Fantastic continues to expand the boundaries of literary and cultural studies, making it a vital resource for scholars, educators, and students interested in the fantastic across disciplines.
