Journal Descriptions

Studies in African Linguistics (SAL) is an international, peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to the study and documentation of African languages. Established in 1970, the journal provides a specialized forum for researchers working in African linguistics and related fields. It publishes original research articles, descriptive studies, theoretical analyses, and scholarly contributions that advance knowledge about the languages of Africa. The journal focuses on a wide range of linguistic areas including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics, language contact, sociolinguistics, and language documentation. It particularly encourages empirical studies based on African language data, including descriptive grammatical sketches and research on lesser-described and endangered languages.Studies in African Linguistics supports interdisciplinary approaches and welcomes contributions that connect linguistic theory with language description, cultural context, and language preservation. The journal publishes in English and French and follows a rigorous peer-review process to maintain academic quality. The journal operates as an open-access publication, allowing researchers, students, and language communities worldwide to access its content freely. It serves as an important academic resource for African language scholars and contributes to the preservation, analysis, and understanding of Africa’s rich linguistic diversity.
