Shakespeare in Southern Africa (SSA)
Journal Descriptions
Shakespeare in Southern Africa is interested in both literary and theatrical approaches to Shakespeare. Its geographical scope is not confined to Southern Africa. Contributions discussing the legacy of Shakespeare elsewhere in Africa, with a specific focus on the Shakespearean experience in particular African countries, are especially welcome. The journal actively seeks to publish articles investigating the impact of Shakespeare in other parts of the world, such as India, the United States, South East Asia and South America. The journal explores how Shakespeare’s texts are adapted, performed, and interpreted in African societies, with a particular focus on issues such as colonialism, identity, language, race, politics, and cultural transformation. It also examines Shakespeare’s relevance in contemporary African theatre and education. Articles published in the journal include literary criticism, performance studies, theoretical essays, and book reviews. The journal encourages critical engagement with both classical Shakespearean texts and modern reinterpretations across African stages and classrooms. A strong emphasis is placed on postcolonial perspectives, making the journal an important space for African scholarship in global Shakespeare studies. It contributes significantly to debates on cultural appropriation, localization of literature, and the role of classical texts in African education systems.
