Journal Descriptions

The question of sensibilities is offered to the social sciences not as an object, but as an approach to knowledge. Questioning the social practices of perception, exploring the formation of affective bonds and the modalities that regulate emotions, questioning the exercise of tastes that often ignore themselves as tastes, means equipping ourselves with a powerful tool for intellection of present and past societies. But it also means taking another look at the political, social, economic, scientific and artistic spheres, and at what separates them. In truth, it's not enough to denounce the rationalist bias that inhabits the social sciences. It's not enough to denounce the rationalist bias that inhabits the social sciences, the bias that, disregarding passions, moods, the senses or even the body's automatisms, tends to grasp human activities and the relationships they forge with one another through the prism of reasoned, reasoning mechanisms alone. Nor is it enough to show that sensitivities - ethical, aesthetic, affective - constantly shape these activities and relationships. Above all, it's important to grasp that ways of seeing, feeling, getting attached, appreciating or disliking are all at once the site of learning and appropriation, and the fruit of power relationships. What we also need to do is understand what, in specific societies, for specific actors and in specific circumstances, makes sensibilities the principle on the basis of which such and such a human activity is lived, organized, discussed, justified or interpreted collectively. And thereby discover how sensibilities play a part, as a practical sense and descriptive mode, in the construction of a world tailored to them.
