Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies (SMSAJMS)

Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published bi-annually by the Faculty of Military Science of Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Our journal has a long and proud history of researching and publishing on a broad spectrum of matters and issues relating to defence, security and military affairs using a discipline-based and inter-disciplinary research approach. Published articles are of high quality since all submissions are refereed (peer-reviewed) by at least two experts in the field. Refereeing is done with complete anonymity and confidentiality. The journal publishes original research articles, review essays, book reviews, and analytical studies covering a wide range of topics including military history, strategy, warfare, peace operations, conflict studies, defence policy, and security governance. A strong emphasis is placed on African security issues while also including global comparative perspectives. Scientia Militaria is accredited by the South African Department of Higher Education and is recognized for its academic quality and contribution to defence-related scholarship. All submissions undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure originality, academic integrity, and scientific value. The journal plays an important role in bridging academic research and practical military application, contributing to debates on security challenges, military transformation, and strategic studies in Africa and beyond. It is also indexed in major open-access databases such as DOAJ.
