Journal Descriptions
The Journal of the History of Italian Law The Journal of the History of Italian Law is the oldest Italian scholarly periodical in the field and the most widely published in terms of personal representation of collaborations and interests. Its "Editorial Committee" includes all tenured and retired full professors in the field and encompasses the full range of legal history studies from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era . The longest-serving of the founders, Mario Enrico Viora, recalled its birth as follows on the occasion of the journal's fiftieth anniversary: On an autumn evening back in 1927, I was walking across the bridge of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome with my close friend and classmate Sergio Mochi-Onory. We had both recently graduated from law school, where I had spent an afternoon reading the major foreign historical-legal journals (the Nouvelle Revue, the glorious Savigny, the Dutch Tijdschrift). I mentioned this to Mochi-Onory, noting that Italy, among the countries of ancient civilization, was the only country without a historical-legal journal. With the recklessness typical of young people, we decided to propose to our teacher Francesco Brandileone the idea of publishing a journal dedicated to the discipline. The journal was founded in 1927 by these two young scholars of the field, with the support of three illustrious professors of the time: Francesco Brandileone, Carlo Calisse, and Nino Tamassia. The first edition was published in 1928. The journal aimed to provide, wherever possible, a dedicated editorial space for scholars of Italian legal history, both established and at the beginning of their academic careers. In this way, it offered a clear reference point, both in Italy and abroad, which proved to be extremely beneficial, especially for the many young Italian scholars who had achieved prestigious international acclaim, such as Calasso, Astuti, De Vergottini, Cassandro, and Marongiu.
