Journal Descriptions

The Review of Socialist Law was a specialized peer reviewed academic journal devoted to the study and analysis of legal systems in socialist countries during the Cold War period. Established in 1975, the journal provided an important platform for scholars examining the structure, theory, and practice of law in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, China, and other socialist states. It emerged at a time when understanding socialist legal frameworks was crucial for comparative law and international relations. The journal published scholarly articles, legislative analyses, case studies, and book reviews focusing on Marxist legal theory, state organization, constitutional law, criminal justice systems, and economic regulation under socialist governance. It also explored the interaction between ideology and legal institutions, offering insights into how law functioned within centrally planned political systems. A key contribution of the journal was its role in bridging Western and Eastern legal scholarship, making information about socialist legal systems more accessible to an international academic audience. Following the political transformations in Eastern Europe and the dissolution of the Soviet Union around the Cold War, the journal was discontinued in 1991 and succeeded by the Review of Central and East European Law, which continues to address legal developments in post-socialist societies.
