Journal Descriptions

Public Reason is an independent, non-profit philosophical and literary forum driven by the conviction that collective reflection, discussion, and imagination can significantly contribute to the formation of more just societies. Created in 2003, its objective is to contribute, through criticism, analysis and reflection, to the understanding of the present time and its potential. Clarifying the terms of a debate, testing arguments, ways of seeing and feeling, outlining perspectives, exploring their meaning: these approaches, which mobilize the resources of philosophical and social investigation as well as those of literary and cultural criticism, are required by the very complexity of the objects that a reason that gives due weight to the powers of experience and imagination may wish to grasp. The journal Raison publique was co-founded in 2003 by Alain Renaut and Patrick Savidan at Editions Bayard. After a testing period and its first three issues, the project was redesigned and relaunched by Patrick Savidan at Presses de l'Université Paris-Sorbonne. With an expanded and diverse editorial board, Raison publique published issues 4 to 15 with this publisher (from 2005 to 2012), before moving to Presses de l'Université de Rennes (issues 16 to 20). Sylvie Servoise joined the editorial team in 2009 to develop the literary and artistic division. The Raison publique team has always been committed to ensuring the widest possible dissemination of its contributors' work. A digital dissemination strategy was implemented in 2009, with the launch of the website raison-publique.fr . Since its creation, the website has offered free access to all of its publications. Its success has been remarkable, and the number of subscribers to its monthly newsletter has steadily increased.
