Journal Descriptions

Les Temps Modernes was published by Gallimard from October 1945 to December 1948, by Julliard from January 1949 to September 1965, by Presses d'aujourd'hui from October 1965 to March 1985, and finally by Gallimard again from April 1985. Jean-Paul Sartre was its founding director; its first editorial board was composed of Raymond Aron, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Leiris, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Albert Olivier, and Jean Paulhan. Along with Sartre, all published numerous articles and works in the journal. The contents of the first issue included Sartre, Richard Whright, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Francis Ponge, Raymond Aron, Jacques-Laurent Bost, and Jean Roy. Beckett, Moravia, Carlo Levi, James Agee, Vian, Queneau, Genet, Leduc, Sarraute followed... Many special issues were devoted to current issues, from all fields: Germany, USA, Italy, Vietnam, Israel, La Gauche, Le Livre de Poche...
