Journal of Asynchronous Learning Network (JALN)
Journal Descriptions
The Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (JALN) was a peer-reviewed academic journal focused on research in online education and asynchronous learning systems. It published studies related to how learners and instructors interact in internet-based education environments without real-time communication, such as discussion boards, learning management systems, and distributed learning platforms. Established in 1997, the journal was one of the earliest scholarly publications dedicated specifically to asynchronous learning networks (ALN), a concept promoted by the Sloan Consortium (now Online Learning Consortium). Its main goal was to improve the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of online education by publishing data-driven research, case studies, and instructional design innovations. The journal emphasized empirical research on student engagement, learning outcomes, instructional strategies, and technology integration in distance education. It played a major role in shaping early online learning research during the rapid expansion of internet-based education. In 2014, the journal was renamed and continued as Online Learning, reflecting a broader scope beyond asynchronous learning alone. JALN is now considered a discontinued title but remains historically important in the field of educational technology and e-learning research. It was widely indexed and contributed significantly to the foundation of modern online education research.
