Journal of Analytic Social Work (JASW)
Journal Descriptions
The Journal of Analytic Social Work was a peer-reviewed academic journal published from 1992 to 1998 by Haworth Press in the United States. The journal focused on the application of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories within the field of social work practice and education. It served as a specialized platform for scholars, clinicians, and social work practitioners interested in integrating analytic psychology concepts with social work interventions. The journal published theoretical papers, clinical case studies, practice-oriented articles, and research exploring unconscious processes, client–worker relationships, and deep psychological dynamics in social work settings. A major emphasis was placed on understanding human behavior through psychoanalytic frameworks, including attachment theory, defense mechanisms, transference, and countertransference in professional practice. It also contributed to debates on how psychodynamic thinking could enhance social work assessment, counseling techniques, and therapeutic interventions in both individual and group settings. The journal helped bridge traditional social work methods with psychoanalytic theory during a period when mental health practice was becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. Although it was discontinued in 1998, its scholarly contributions influenced later developments in clinical social work and psychodynamic practice. It was succeeded by related publications that continued exploring psychoanalytic approaches within social and clinical work contexts.
