Comparative Southeast European Studies is an international, peer reviewed, open access academic journal that focuses on the political, social, economic, cultural, and historical developments of Southeast Europe. The journal is published by De Gruyter in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS), Germany. It continues the long publishing tradition of the earlier journal Südosteuropa but has been restructured since 2021 into a modern comparative and interdisciplinary platform. The journal publishes original research articles, thematic sections, policy analyses, interviews, commentaries, and book reviews. It aims to foster comparative perspectives on the region spanning the eastern Adriatic, the Balkans, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. Key topics include democratization, nationalism, migration, ethnic relations, economic transformation, governance, legal systems, gender studies, and cultural change. All articles undergo rigorous peer review to ensure academic quality and relevance. As a fully open access journal, it provides global accessibility to research findings, supporting scholarly exchange and policy-relevant discussions.
