Journal Descriptions

Archaea is a peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal dedicated to research on the domain of life known as archaea. Established in 2002, the journal provided an international platform for publishing original research articles and review papers covering all aspects of archaeal biology. This includes studies on archaeal genetics, genomics, enzymology, metabolism, molecular biology, evolutionary relationships, and ecological roles in extreme and non-extreme environments. The journal placed strong emphasis on understanding archaeal diversity in environments such as hot springs, deep-sea hydrothermal vents, hypersaline lakes, and soil ecosystems. It also supported research into the biotechnological and industrial applications of archaea, including their use in bioenergy, environmental remediation, and enzyme production. In addition, bioinformatics and metagenomic studies played a major role in expanding knowledge about uncultivable archaeal species. Published originally by Hindawi and later managed under Wiley, Archaea contributed significantly to microbiological research by focusing on a relatively underexplored domain of life compared to bacteria and eukaryotes. The journal operated as an open-access platform, allowing global accessibility to research findings. After more than two decades of publication, the journal ceased in 2024, leaving behind a substantial archive of research that continues to be valuable for microbial ecology and evolutionary biology studies.
