Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ALA)
Journal Descriptions
Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ATLA) is an established, peer‑reviewed scientific journal dedicated to promoting and disseminating research on methods that reduce, refine, or replace the use of animals in biomedical research and toxicity testing. For more than five decades, ATLA has served the global scientific community as a leading platform for scholarly work on innovative non‑animal models, including advanced in vitro, in silico, and ex vivo approaches, and research that informs safer, more ethical scientific practices. It publishes original research articles, comprehensive reviews, letters, commentaries, and book reviews that relate to alternative methodologies, validation studies, implementation of non‑animal techniques, and analysis of animal use policies. ATLA supports the scientific principles of the Three Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and advocates for scientific and regulatory change toward more humane, human‑relevant research paradigms. The content is relevant to researchers, educators, regulatory scientists, and policymakers interested in improving the scientific rigor and ethical standards of research involving biological systems. With SAGE Publications as its publishing partner and Replacing Animal Research (formerly the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments) as its associated organisation, ATLA remains at the forefront of developments that shape ethical scientific innovation and practice worldwide
