AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples (AAIJIP)
Journal Descriptions
AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples is an internationally respected peer‑reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing Indigenous scholarship and worldviews across diverse global contexts. Since its inception in 2005 under the leadership of Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga — New Zealand’s Māori Centre of Research Excellence — the journal has provided a space for Indigenous scholars and collaborators to produce rigorous, culturally grounded research that speaks to Indigenous issues of identity, culture, knowledge, and governance. Published quarterly, its multidisciplinary content includes original research articles, commentaries, and critical situation reports that explore themes such as decolonization, land and sovereignty, cultural revitalization, language preservation, health and wellbeing, education, legal rights, environmental stewardship, and community resilience. The journal emphasizes work that is rooted in Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies, making visible the ways Indigenous peoples conceptualize and engage with local, national, and global challenges. AlterNative bridges Indigenous thought and academic inquiry by fostering dialogue between Indigenous and non‑Indigenous researchers committed to culturally respectful and socially transformative scholarship. It has become a key platform for voices that challenge dominant paradigms of knowledge production and contribute to equitable, just futures for Indigenous communities worldwide.
