Allgemeines Statistisches Archiv (ASA)

Allgemeines Statistisches Archiv (AStA) was a long-standing German scientific journal in the field of statistics, founded in 1890 by Georg von Mayr. It served as an important publication organ of the German Statistical Society and became one of the most influential statistical journals in Europe. The journal focused on theoretical and applied statistics, including probability theory, econometrics, social statistics, and methodological developments in statistical science. For more than a century, AStA provided a platform for scholarly contributions that advanced both mathematical statistics and its applications in economics and social sciences. The journal published peer-reviewed research articles, methodological studies, and statistical analyses relevant to empirical research. It played a major role in shaping statistical thinking in Germany and internationally. From 2007 onwards, the journal was split into two successor publications: AStA – Advances in Statistical Analysis, focusing on statistical theory and methodology, and AStA – Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistisches Archiv, focusing on applied economic and social statistics. Both journals continue the legacy of the original AStA under Springer publishing.
