ACM SIGMAP Bulletin (SB)
Journal Descriptions
The ACM SIGMAP Bulletin served as a key communication channel for researchers and practitioners in mathematical programming through ACM’s Special Interest Group on Mathematical Programming (SIGMAP). Starting in 1969, the bulletin documented developments in optimization theory, algorithmic design, and applications of mathematical programming in science and technology. Although not issued on a strictly scheduled periodic basis like modern newsletters, its multiple numbered issues per year reflected the vibrant research activity in optimization and operations research at the time. These issues often included abstracts and summaries from mathematical programming symposia and workshops, editorial columns, and announcements of SIGMAP events, fostering a sense of community among SIGMAP members and mathematical programming specialists affiliated with ACM. Mathematical programming itself is a foundational area of computational mathematics and computer science, covering methods to solve problems where an objective function is optimized subject to constraints. Topics of interest spanned linear programming, network flows, nonlinear optimization, integer and combinatorial optimization, and emerging algorithmic techniques for large-scale problems. The bulletin provided historical insight into how theoretical developments and computational tools evolved during a period when optimization was increasingly influencing computing research and practice. While the bulletin appears to have ceased publication by the early 1980s, its archived issues remain valuable historical records of mathematical programming research discourse within the ACM SIG ecosystem.
