Aboriginal History Journal (AHJ)
Journal Descriptions
Aboriginal History is a peer-reviewed academic journal established in 1977 that focuses on the historical experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia. It is published annually by ANU Press in collaboration with Aboriginal History Inc., an organization based at the Australian National University. The journal is widely recognized for promoting Indigenous perspectives in historical research and for supporting interdisciplinary scholarship across history, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, linguistics, and cultural studies. The journal publishes original research articles, archival studies, biographies, oral histories, and critical analyses of Indigenous and colonial interactions. It is particularly important for preserving Indigenous oral traditions and previously unpublished historical manuscripts. Over time, it has become a leading platform for scholars studying Indigenous history and colonial encounters in Australia and the broader Pacific region. A key feature of the journal is its commitment to open-access publishing, making all issues freely available to readers worldwide. This enhances accessibility for researchers, students, and Indigenous communities. The journal also emphasizes ethical research practices, especially in relation to Indigenous cultural heritage and representation. Today, Aboriginal History remains a significant academic resource for understanding Australia’s colonial past and Indigenous resilience.
