University The University of Travancore which eventually became the University of Kerala was established in 1937 by a promulgation of the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the Universit who was also the first Chancellor of the University. Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan of the State, was the first Vice-Chancellor. It was the sixteenth University to be set up in India and ten Colleges within the State of Travancore which were affiliated to the Madras University became the affiliated colleges of the University of Travancore. School of Distance Education The School of Distance Education, started in 1976 as a teaching and research department of the University of Kerala, is one of the pioneering centre of distance learning in the state. The School was founded with the following objectives: To provide quality education to the disadvantaged sections including women and senior citizens. To promote career advancement by encouraging diversification and updating of knowledge. To provide training in softer and technical skills. To participate in human resource development.
